We use Prime Editing, a next-generation technology that can “search and replace” to restore normal genetic function almost anywhere in the genome. Prime Editing searches to find the precise place in the genome to edit and replaces the segment of faulty DNA with a correct copy of DNA.  A single Prime Editor can correct the individual mutations found across patients, meaning Prime Editing can potentially address more than 90 percent of known disease-causing genetic mutations.

Position Overview

Prime Medicine is seeking a highly talented, motivated, and seasoned senior-level Scientist with drug discovery project and people management experience to lead our Translational Sciences Group. This new group will support programs from lead optimization through early clinical studies, including internal and partnered programs. The successful individual will report directly to the CSO.

Responsibilities  

  • Develop and implement translational medicine plans for projects in keeping with company strategy
  • Develop or potentially discover biomarkers that identify patients who will respond to Prime’s candidate medicines, predict patient clinical response, demonstrate target engagement, and/or correlate with clinical efficacy/safety endpoints
  • Develop deep knowledge of natural history using internal and external sources and networks, and where appropriate participate in or design Ph 0 studies to support advancement to clinic
  • Establish and maintain networks of disease area experts, and responsible for bringing regular input from these disease area experts internally
  • The group will be expected to work closely with the Project Manager, Research Project Lead, DMPK, Biostatistician, and clinical lead. This role will require working flexibly as a part of a vibrant start-up culture.
  • This is a newly forming group requiring an initial hands-on approach to supporting the programs through building internal and external relationships and contracts, and serving on internal project teams. The leader will be expected to build out a small group initially over the first 6 months, to support Biomarker, translational medicine plans and external relationships.

The successful candidate must have the following expertise:

  • Track record in guiding rare disease programs from pre-clinical to clinical evaluation
  • Experience in oncology is a plus
  • Experience in real world evidence and natural history studies
  • Collaborate with research and analytical teams for internal assay and reagent development efforts.
  • Experience with establishing and maintaining outsourcing and vendor selection/relationships. Managing assay transfer to CROs followed by validation/qualification, assuring quality of raw data in compliance with regulatory guidelines.
  • Oversight of technical bioanalytical conduct of studies/projects, trouble shooting of methods, data analysis & interpretation, documentation and reporting of results.
  • Expertise in developing CLIA biomarker assays for clinical evaluation
  • Experience in managing disease expertise groups
  • Sourcing and compiling natural history
  • Ability to work closely with multiple programs, development teams and cross functional groups.
  • Ability to manage teams, and lead projects in early clinical development

Qualifications:

  • MD or PhD or similar in Medicine, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or related area with at least 10 years relevant experience in a pharmaceutical or biotechnology startup organization including leadership and mentorship experience
  • Evidence of inventiveness and scientific creativity should be demonstrated
  • Track record of success in advancing late-stage drug discovery programs through clinical proof of concept
  • Previous experience with genetic therapies including gene therapy, gene editing, or oligonucleotide therapies is preferred
  • Experience with rare diseases is preferred
  • Ability to lead as an individual contributor as well as manage a group will be necessary in this growing organization
  • Outstanding scientific leadership and collaboration skills, excellent verbal, written, and visual communication skills
  • Demonstrated maturity and accountability of contribution to and leadership in a complex matrixed organization
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, self-awareness, and ability to manage team dynamics
  • Strong foundational understanding of regulatory path to clinic for rare diseases ideal
