In July of 2020, my mother passed away from malignant metastatic breast cancer. She was diagnosed six years prior for five of those six years, and she lived an everyday life thanks to taking part in 2 clinical trials. For the five years while on clinical trials, she was relatively devoid of side effects allowing her to live a mostly healthy life, which included seeing the birth of three grandchildren, volunteering at a local health clinic, and playing cards weekly with her closest friends. The last year of her life, she fought through chemotherapy and was marred by severe side effects until the disease spread to her brain, resulting in her death at home being cared for by loved ones. As someone who has been on the other side of the patient/researcher divide, I witnessed firsthand what the development of new therapies means to patients and their families. I joined Prime Medicine with the hopes of extending the lives and well-being of patients with genetic diseases through what I believe is the revolutionary technology of Prime Editing.”
